 May 10, 2025 / 8 pm + 9.15 pm Butohatelier by Stefan Maria Marb Body_Prayer (premiere) Kirche St. Paul In the dance performance Body_Prayer we turn to a spiritual dimension, to prayer and its expression in dance. In this existential communication, we ask for something that is missing or oppressing us, we articulate a deep longing and at the same time open ourselves to an unknown (jap. ankoku) dimension, an undefined space of desires. Our request first arises in the mind and then expresses itself through our body posture, for example by throwing ourselves on the floor or kneeling down in humility. Collectively or alone, depending on culture and religion, many forms of body language are possible. Our body appears as a whole, which is larger than our body. In their writings, the philosopher Edmund Husserl and his student Edith Stein describe the body as a zero point of orientation. This means that everything comes together at the zero point of the body, the ego becomes the body and distance is no longer possible here. It is therefore soul, subject, feeling and emotion all in one. In Christianity, the body of Christ is particularly revered during mass, it is a decisive fixed point and a turning point, as it embodies the symbol of resurrection and is therefore the pledge of victory over death. In Butoh, people dance with their entire body and move in unknown (jap. ankoku) space. The performance addresses the antagonism that exists in our culture between our material body and the mostly neglected spiritual dimension. Driven by live music and the words of the actor, the dancers of the Butoh studio perform in the entire expansive space of the church in St. Paul.
