Zufit Simon
Bodies in Rebellion

schwere reiter

(...)Together with the other three dancers, she creates a permanent oscillation between poses of victory and hurt, between collective and isolation, between darkness and light, beat and silence, it is the infinite nuances of gray, between the poles of black and white, that Zufit Simon works out, because they are far too often neglected.(…) Sylvia Schreiber, BR

How do rebellious bodies form and what strategies are needed to question power relations? What is specific to female protest and how can women stand up for their rights in a peaceful way? Which impact have acoustic signals and the use of the voice? After the successful production “Radical Cheerleading”, Zufit Simon continues her research into choreographed forms of protest. The main focus is on the conditions in public space and protected theatre space. Her choreography explores the ambivalence of bodies that act powerfully but are open and vulnerable: oscillating between power and vulnerability.

The Israeli-German dancer and choreographer Zufit Simon has lived in Germany for 25 years and has been performing her choreographies in the independent scene for 20 years, many of which have won awards. She has been represented several times at the German Dance Platform and tours internationally, including in cooperation with the Goethe Institute. Her pieces have titles such as “all about nothing”, “GONE”, ‘Fleischlos’, “Wild Thing” or most recently “Radical Cheerleading” - she is currently working with physical forms of protest - the body in its concrete state is always at the center - this organism can appear quite alien - although every body is more or less equipped with the same organs, it is fundamentally different.
With her formal, visually strong style, which is always rooted in physicality, Zufit Simon is a force to be reckoned with in the Munich dance scene. She is always on stage herself in her pieces, whether solo, duet, trio or quintet. It is important to her to expose herself to what she demands of the dancers. Her long-term partners are Dietrich Oberländer (production/stage/lighting) and Fredrik Olofsson (music/video). In 2025, she will receive the City of Munich Dance Award in recognition of her life's work. The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 8 at schwere reiter.
