Judith Hummel

performance and dance artist, teacher, shiatsu practitioner

Judith Hummel works as a freelance artist in the field of performance and choreography at the interface of movement and visual art. She deals with themes of intimacy, closeness and distance, looking at and being looked at. The aim is to create simple, yet structured situations that extend over a certain duration and open up diverse possibilities of perception.

Since 2019, she has retraced her grandmother's escape route in stages. In 2023, the five-year project "Where do I come from? Walking - from Romania to Germany" reaches its climax. As part of the Doppelpass series of the DG Kunstraum, all three films created will be shown (vernissage on 8.9.2023). Performative live installations were planned for the first two stages, which became video works due to the pandemic (DANCE Festival Munich 2021 and RODEO Festival Munich 2020). In 2017 and 2018, she developed an archive project on the British choreographer Rosemary Butcher: "Where do we come from? On Rosemary Butcher" (1947-2016), a spatial installation with text, sound and video (schwere reiter, Munich 2017), as well as a publication of interview texts. In the interdisciplinary debut project "AKT tracing, remembering, finding poses from Venus, Olympia and us", three nude models composed performatively staged positions, accompanied by a live musician. (Galerie der Künstler, 2014 and RODEO Festival Munich 2016). In the work PAPIERDIALOGE // NKP150/125/100, a dancer and a musician entered into dialogue with the material paper for over two hours. The work continued the research on sculptural movement and sound states (INFEKTION! Staatsoper im Schiller Theater Werkstatt, Berlin 2015; schwere reiter, Munich 2016).

The projects were supported by the Cultural Department of the City of Munich, the Bavarian State Association for Contemporary Dance with funds from the Bavarian Ministry of Science and the Arts (BLZT), the Stadtsparkasse München, the Richard Stury Foundation, as well as the NATIONAL PERFORMANCE NETWORK - STEPPING OUT and Dis-Tanz-Solo, funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media as part of the NEUSTART KULTUR initiative.

As a performer she has danced in the exhibition formats "12 Rooms/Ruhrtriennale" and "Move/Haus der Kunst" in works by Allora&Calzadilla (Revolving Door, 2012), Xavier Le Roy & Mårten Spångberg (Production, 2011), as well as in stage pieces by Rosemary Butcher (Test Pieces, 2014/2015), Jérôme Bel (The Show Must Go On, 2012), HUNGER&SEIDE, Sabine Glenz, Ruth Geiersberger, Doris Uhlich (HABITAT pandemic version, 2020) and Bühler&Hicks (Der Klumpen, 2022). For Anouk van Dijk and Martin Nachbar she worked as choreographic assistant. In the field of dance and performance she learned at the SNDO - School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam and with internationally working teachers like João Fiadeiro, Lilia Mestre and Nik Haffner.

She completed her master's degree in theater studies, art history and pedagogy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich in 2008. In March 2023, she completed the Master's program Contemporary Dance Education (MA CoDE) at the University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK) in Frankfurt am Main.
