TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA

How much choreography do you really need? The renowned British choreographer Jonathan Burrows – known for his groundbreaking book*A Choreographer’s Handbook* – places this radical question at the heart of his five-day workshop for all professional dance practitioners who wish to re-examine their work.

No ready-made solutions, no rigid system, no single correct method: Burrows invites participants to fundamentally question and further develop their own choreographic practice. How, and indeed why, does one approach the production of a dance performance in the first place? The focus is on personal questions, observations and experiences – familiarity with the book is not a prerequisite.

Burrows has been collaborating with composer Matteo Fargion for over 35 years; their works have been performed in 37 countries. He is the author of*A Choreographer’s Handbook* (Routledge 2010/2025) and*Writing Dance* (Varamo Press 2022), and is currently an associate professor at the Centre for Dance Research at Coventry University. His minimalist, precise and often humorous approach to movement and music has established him internationally as a key figure in contemporary dance.
