The performance ‘The Green Man’ showcases the result of a collaboration between the Butoh artist Stefan Maria Marb and the British sound artist Nick Parkin, who is a guest at Villa Waldberta this year. The joint project is underpinned by the concept of the ‘Spirit of Place’, which draws on the primal forces of nature and takes into account the atmospheric qualities of the various locations within the landscape in question.

Building on this, the project aims to explore cultural intersections that lead into the European spiritual-pagan world of ideas, where the concept of the so-called Green Man is of particular significance – a frequently depicted figure found in numerous ancient churches (e.g. in the famous Roslyn Chapel near Edinburgh) across the Central European continent. In ancient European mythology, this ‘Green Man’ is understood as a guardian of the forest and, furthermore, as a keeper of the gateway to another, metaphysical world, which manifests itself in the spirit of the landscape. In the current Butoh performance, elements of sound and dance are explored, drawing inspiration from the interaction with the sites and the landscape in and around Villa Waldberta.

As part of the Open Studios at Villa Waldberta.
