Yumiko Yoshioka: Body Resonance – based on Butoh and Organic Movement
Stefan Maria Marb presents: Yumiko Yoshioka
We are delighted to welcome the dancer and choreographer Yumiko Yoshioka back to Munich as a guest lecturer after many years. The focus of her current workshop is on the conscious exploration of the unity of body, mind and soul. By engaging with our collective memories, we can tap into a rich source of creative resources through dance, which activates the inner process of metamorphosis and enriches the core of our lives. The concept of Body Resonance is a key to opening the doors to an ever-changing world within and beyond ourselves, helping to unveil the body’s secrets whilst preserving them until they finally glow and tremble. Everything resonates with one another. Our body is a passageway and a vessel of time. Through dialogue with it, we can learn to let ourselves be moved by inner and outer forces, and thus realise that we are part of the universe.

Vita
Yumiko tours worldwide, and her dance embodies a culturally open form of Butoh that nevertheless remains true to the dance’s fundamental principles ‘between light and shadow, a place where the sources of life lie’. As a member of the “Ariadone Company” from 1974 to 1982, she danced alongside Ko Murobushi and Carlotta Ikeda in Paris in 1978 in “Le Dernier Eden – Porte de l’au-delà”, the very first Butoh performance in a theatre outside Japan. In 1988, she co-founded the tatoeba Teatre Dance Grotesque with Minako Seki and delta RA’i in Berlin (1988 to 1996). From 1995 to 2015, she was a core member of the art laboratory TEN PEN CHii, alongside Joachim Manger (visual artist) and Zam Johnson (composer and musician), which explored the interplay between Butoh dance, space, music and visual art. She directed the international festival eX...it! (Dance Exchange Project) in Germany from its inception in 1995 until its conclusion in 2019. Since 2021, she has been the artistic director of the Butoh Lab Camp, which takes place every two years in Romania. Her workshop “Body Resonance – based on Organic Movement and Butoh” is offered worldwide, particularly in North and South America, Asia and Europe.
